Master of Maritime Studies

The Australian Maritime College Master of Maritime Studies program – which incorporates a Graduate Certificate and a Graduate Diploma as entry or exit points - is a general studies degree that has been structured as a vehicle to enable exploration of the ‘maritime space'.  The program is available online and studying can be undertaken part-time.

In the context of this program, the maritime space is considered to consist of a number of interconnecting elements that relate to or are dependent upon the sea:

the maritime industries and associated services and infrastructures
    government, defence and security
    the marine and coastal environment
maritime communities and culture: amenity and leisure, maritime art, history, literature and spirituality.

It is increasingly recognised that effective management of - or in - the maritime space is of necessity a multidimensional and complex process involving the interaction of communities, government and international organisations and conventions, the maritime industries and the marine environmental sciences.

These elements interrelate and interconnect:

Management in this context is much broader than organisational management – it also encompasses the development of public policy, the administration of the maritime jurisdiction and of the sectors that operate within it and the management of marine resources. Those involved in such management have the challenging task of balancing the conflicting and interacting needs of a wide variety of stakeholders.
